  Design for Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial gets final OK

  The planning agency for the federal government gave final approval to designs for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial to be built in WAshington, D.C.’s West Potomac Park.

  The features approved by the National Capital Planning Commission include a semicircle-shaped wall inscribed with King’s words, a stone “mountain of despair” referencing a phrase from his speeches, a carved statue of King, a visitors building and red maple trees nearby.

  NCPC rejected proposed security bollards — short vertical posts — for the memorial’s two entrances,

  The statue of King has been the most controversial portions of the project’s design. In April, the secretary of the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, Thomas Luebke, issued a statement saying the design for the bust departed from the original vision of a humble, meditative pose for the civil rights leader and instead presented “a stiffly frontal image, static in pose, confrontational in character.”

  The bust was later change to the commission’s approval.

  The King memorial, to be built across the tidal basin from the Jefferson Memorial, will be the first to be built since the World War II Memorial was completed in 2004. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2010 and is expected to cost $120 million.

  I think this is funny! Im white and my husband is black and he thinks its funny too! there is a “stuff white people like” and that is hilarious too! FYI: I dont wear shorts…EVER! LOL and Barrack Obama is on the “white” list too!
