Stuffed Animal Memorials

March 21st, 2008 · 4 Comments

Stuffed Animal Memorials are the Stuffed Animal “sculptures” you’ll see on street corners around urban neighborhoods dedicated to murdered children (and sometimes young adults). The practice of leaving items at a crime scene is something you’ll see in many cultures (think about all the pictures, flowers, and various items left at Buckingham palace in remembrance of Lady Di).

Black folks need to be mindful of removing the stuffed animal memorials before they become an eye sore. This practice has become a thing of mockery (just check around the internet for public opinion). I don’t know who started it. I truly understand the good intentions behind it. However, it’s getting a bit out of hand.

Side Note: Hey, maybe some crazy white art dealer will start collecting them off the street or commission some Black person to make them, sell them in galleries. Yes I know…it will never happen.

The funny thing about this is that white people do simliar things to the stuffed animal ritual. Except instead of using stuffed animals we nail flowers and crosses to trees because we don’t kill each other with guns, we kill ourselves by drinking and driving and smacking into trees

Yeah, what’s up with these damn things? They are all over DC and they’re left around for ages until they become rat harborages. Maybe the black people should focus their energies on what actions would stop these senseless killings from happening in the first place.

OK. It is one thing to leave a flower. IT is another to leave a trash dollar store stuffed animal nobody wants.
