“Everybody Loves A Black Girl”

February 25th, 2008 · 10 Comments

I love this shirt.

Black women get upset, bothered, and…well…pissed when we go to the store around this time a year (before St. Patrick’s Day) and see all the “Everybody Loves A Irish Girl” shirts. I’ve seen shirts proclaiming that everybody loves a Blonde, a Brunette, a Scottish Girl, even a Jamaican Girl. Jamaican was the closest I’d seen. LOL So, I designed this shirt so that I could have one. So, that I could wear my truth.

There is something about a black woman. Solomon knew it. Mark Anthony knew it. Slave owners knew it. Black men know it everyday of their lives. Our skin, our sass, our hair, our a…well, you know. There is nothing quite like a Black Woman, Black Girl, Black Sista…nothing.

That shirt is cute…and I don’t know about your family background but a very large percentage of African-American women CAN wear those shirts with pride on St. Paddy’s- at around the same time, freed slaves were moving North in the late 19th century, a shit-ton of Irish immigrants were coming to America and settling in the same areas the blacks relocated to. Until the early 19oos, other Euro-Americans looked down on the Irish and they weren’t considered “white.” So both freed slaves and Irish immigrants lived and worked together in the same areas and were both severely oppressed leading to many inter-racial marriages between blacks and Irish.

Erin, you can get the shirt at http://cafepress.com/nappyuniversity

Triskelion, you are correct however that information is not something that the average American with think of if they saw me in a “Everybody Loves an Irish Girl” t-shirt. Trust me.

Just a point about your comments - Cleopatra was a Macedonian Greek and not a native African, ie not black.

I definitely want one of those! And Triskelion’s right about us being able to wear the Irish t-shirts. In my case, it would have to be “Everybody loves a Welsh girl,” though. I had a lot of fun traveling in Wales, calling ahead to make hotel reservations and having people say (on the phone), “Oh, a Welsh name! You’ve come home!” And then I would show up and shock the mess out of them. Definitely gettin’ the shirt!
